The UK is currently gripped by a serious heatwave, and while many of us are struggling to stay cool, the carp are feeling the pressure too. High temperatures and bright sunshine often lead to lethargic fish that have moved off the bottom and into the upper layers of the water. If you want to keep your success rate high during these sweltering days, you need to adapt your tactics.

Shift Your Strategy

When the heat is intense, the bottom of the lake can become oxygen depleted. The fish will often patrol the surface or hang out in the mid-water looking for cooler, more oxygenated areas.

• Move to the Surface: This is the perfect time to break out the floaters. Fish are much more willing to feed on the top when the sun is beating down.
• Target the Margins: If you are staying on the bottom, search for shaded areas or spots near heavy weed beds where the water might be slightly cooler and offer more cover for the fish.
• Night Fishing is King: Carp are far more active in the cooler darkness. A session from dusk until dawn can be significantly more productive than sitting out in the midday sun.

Refine Your Bait Approach

In high heat, you do not want to overwhelm the fish with a massive bed of bait. Keep your approach small and highly attractive.

• Less is More: With oxygen levels potentially lower, fish are not looking for a heavy meal. A single, high quality hookbait or a very small PVA bag is often better than throwing kilos of bait into a swim where the fish are already sluggish.

Don’t Forget Your Own Comfort

Fishing is about enjoyment, and a heatwave can be brutal if you are not prepared. Ensure you have plenty of water, use high factor sun protection, and keep yourself in the shade whenever possible. A comfortable angler is a focused angler, which always leads to better results on the bank.
